The Bible Speaks Today – Possessed Possessions

And He said to them, “Take heed, and beware of all covetousness; for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” (Luke 12:15)

SMARTPHONES SmartphonesAll of us tend to get caught in the snare of owning things. The world assesses a person’s net-worth based on the quantum of assets he owns. And so there is that rat-race mentality to acquire more and more. It has been said, “he who dies with the most toys wins.” Even Christians often fall prey to this scourge that sweeps through all humanity. All over we find people striving hard to add to their possessions, to gain more, believing that more will bring happiness, security, peace and joy. We live in an age of consumerism. We consume food, drink, entertainment, knowledge, gadgets, etc. We network and live in a generation that is connected through technology, and we abound in information, possessions and connections. Is this what life is all about? Jesus once said, “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” (Mark 8:36). Continue reading

The Dangers of Boy & Girl Relationships

When I finished school and entered college, one of the first peer pressures to hit me was through the popular line “who’s your chick, man?” or in other words do you have a girlfriend and if so, who is she?  It was kind of customary to have a special girlfriend to generally hang around with so as to be with the “in” crowd.  Be it custom or not, the trend is definitely here to stay with the current generation. Strangely, in previous generations, our parents, grandparents and upwards seemed to have had a far stricter view of boy & girl relationships. One wonders if perhaps they knew something of the dangers involved and therefore used the stricter and wiser approach.  We will never know for sure because correct instruction in these truths were never properly handed down to future generations. However, God in his wisdom and love for His youth is helping us to see the dangers of pre-marital relationships between young people in search of love. Continue reading

The Bible Speaks Today – Inspired Scriptures

“All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Tim 3:16-17).

As a younger Christian, I would often wonder how the above claim that “all scripture is inspired by God” could be true when at the same time it was clear that many human authors actually penned the various books in the Bible. Continue reading

The Bible Speaks Today – Recognizing His Voice

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me,” (John 10:27)

There are many voices in our world today calling for our attention.  There is the voice of the thief, the voice of the wolf, the voice of worldly philosophers, the voice of politicians, the voice of peers, the voice of new-age techniques, and the voice of God as well.  There are voices telling us the problems as well as the solutions.  There are many voices clamoring for our attention and calling us to follow and none of them are without significance.  But the voice of the Sacred Scriptures is the voice of Christ (John 1:1).  That voice spoke in the beginning, spoke right through history, through prophecy and still continues to speak even in heaven.  The voice of Christ still speaks today offering salvation, security and eternal life to all who have ears to hear. The Bible Speaks Today – God Promises To Guide Us

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_327553God’s Word is represented as a lamp for the feet.  It is a “lamp”, not a blazing sun, nor even a lighthouse–but a plain, common lamp or lantern which one can carry about in the hand. It is a lamp “for the feet,” not throwing its beams far and wide, but shining its light only on the little bit of road ahead on which the Christian’s feet are walking.  The law of divine guidance is, “Step by step”. One who holds up a lantern on a dark village-road at night, sees only one step before him. If he takes that step, the lantern also moves forward, making the next step plain. In this way, finally he reaches his destination in safety, without once stepping into darkness. The whole way was shown to him, but only one single step at a time. This illustrates the usual method of God’s guidance. Continue reading

The Bible Speaks Today – God Is In Charge Of Your Life

“Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness (patience.) And let steadfastness (patience) have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (James 1:2-4).

stormsIt almost seems like life was easier before we came into a personal encounter with Christ.  For no sooner did the initial honeymoon time with the Lord fade off, than it appears as if “all hell broke loose” soon afterwards.  Trials from within and without seemed to be the order of the day, often driving the young Christian to despair.  But as James says, patience is one of those golden virtues that God develops in us using trials as the means. The Bible Speaks Today…. Anxious Anxiety

(Read Mt. 6:24-34) No one can serve two masters……..you cannot serve God and mammon*. Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat and what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing …….But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things shall be yours as well”. Continue reading

The Bible Speaks Today – Flavourless Salt

You are the salt of the earth: but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men. (Mathew 5:13)

saltSalt is a flavouring agent used to make food taste good.  It is easily available and has many uses besides being a flavouring agent in food.  It is used for removing certain kinds of stains, it is a good preservative, it has many healing uses and removes offensive odours. Continue reading
